HKUST Wins Two Wharton-QS Stars Awards For Its Innovative e-Learning Programs
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received two awards at the Wharton-QS Stars Awards 2014: Reimagine Education, also known as the “Oscars” of innovation in higher education, in recognition of its innovative e-learning programs. The Awards, the first global awards for recognizing innovative higher education pedagogies that enhance learning and employability, were organized by The Wharton SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management, University of Pennsylvania, and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), publisher of the QS World University Rankings.

HKUST Students Win Healthcare Designathon AIA Group Sees Market Potential Of The Winning Product
Four students of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) won the top honors as Champions of Hong Kong’s first ever Healthcare Designathon Competition. The winning product, Fit-Kick, seeks to provide performance gains and injury prevention for athletes. The AIA Group who sponsored the contest has found the product very interesting and is advising the students on its future development. The team will hold talks with AIA EDGE, The AIA Group’s innovation unit, and venture capitalists in the coming weeks to provide resources to further develop the product for commercialization.

HKUST Students Win National Aircraft Design Competition
Five undergraduate students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) came second among 153 teams – comprising mostly postgraduate students and professionals, in the first and biggest national aircraft design competition organized by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). The “Soaring Dragon” is a two-seater amphibious aircraft featuring a pair of hydrofoils at the bottom that minimizes the take-off distance on water, a downward folding wing tip that warns pilots of water breaches and foldable wings which allows flexible movements and storage on ground. The students who created “Soaring Dragon” will be invited to join an expert team at HKUST commissioned to build a similar model for the private aviation market in Mainland China.

HKUST Co-hosts My Toy Design Competition 2014-15 with Toy Industry Leaders
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) co-hosts My Toy Design Competition 2014-15 with the Hong Kong Toys Council (HKTC) and the Toys Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong Limited (TMHK), aiming to nurture creativity of students, recruit exceptional design talents and maintain the sustainable development of the toy industry in Hong Kong.

HKUST First Local Institution to Co-host “National Challenge Cup”
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) signed a memorandum with Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) today to map out the details of co-hosting the “National Challenge Cup” – a competition branded as the Olympiad of Science and Technology for university students. It is the first time for a local university to co-host the event in the Cup’s 25 years of history.The biennial "National Challenge Cup" is a mega contest in academic and technological innovation for university students in China. Since Tsinghua University first hosted the event, it has turned into an iconic competition on science and innovation with its scale growing from a few hundred participants out of 19 institutes, to nearly 7,000 students from over 400 universities. Winners included a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, nearly 10 heads of state key laboratories and over 220 professors and doctoral advisors.

HKUST Engineering Team Invents Cheaper, Lighter and Stronger Aluminium Composite for Wide Applications
A Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) research team led by Prof Yui-bun Chan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with support from leading global aluminium producer UC RUSAL (SEHK:486, EuroNext: RUSAL/RUAL, Moscow Exchange: RUALR/RUALRS), has discovered a new aluminium composite – Fiber Reinforced Aluminium. This new material is stronger than existing aluminium, cheaper and lighter than steel, and can also be used with insulation panels designed to produce a building envelope system that is safer, cheaper, more energy-efficient and easier to mount. The project is now undergoing its final phase and is expected to complete in 2015.

HKUST 2014 One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition Fosters Entrepreneurial Spirit
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition to foster entrepreneurship and identify the best business prospects. The Competition is a platform for HKUST community to bring their business ideas focusing on innovative and technology from concept to consumer. Winners can use the cash prize as seed money to form their companies or to realize the commercialization of their inventions.A total of 117 teams participated in the Competition this year. Each team consisted of at least one member of students, faculties, staff and alumni from HKUST’s school of Science, Engineering and Business. An international judging panel comprising leading executives, venture capitalists and entrepreneurial academics shortlisted 12 finalists for the final round of competition.

HKUST Partners with Thales to Boost Innovation and Technological Development
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Thales have entered into a collaborative agreement, marking a milestone in the joint efforts to boost innovation, nurture young engineering innovators, and serve the development of smart cities in the region. Under the agreement, HKUST and Thales will work closely on collaborative research projects including next-generation information technology on aeronautical, space, defense, transportation, security and x-ray imaging. The agreement will also see the exchanges of researchers and mutual visits, student internship and co-nourishment of engineers.
