Frank has had a dream of flying from a young age, and he showed a keen interest in the research and development of unmanned helicopter technology during his time at HKUST. In 2005, he and his team participated in ABU Robocon and won third prize among teams competing from across Asia. In 2006, he completed his final thesis at HKUST, which included the development of a flight control system for unmanned platforms. He then founded DJI based on this system, and became the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technical Officer of the company.

A research team at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently invented a new fusion-based technology which achieves remarkably improved accuracy to position people indoor, enabling novel smart location-based applications such as indoor navigation, location-based personalized recommendation, crowd analysis and people flow control.

HKUST alums emphasize a strong team always brings better results for all.Long before he found Maxus Tech with his friends, Mark Zeng had HKUST on his radar as he was looking for a graduate program in Hong Kong.“I thought I would meet a lot of people from different backgrounds, and that I would keep in pace with the development of the technologies in Mainland, as HKUST probably had more exposure to technical progresses in Chinese market than say, schools in the US or the UK,” Mark recalls.As a student in HKUST, Mark soon made a lot of friends, but little did he know he would bring them along as partners and find a company together someday. After Mark graduated, he took a job in the banking sector, and it would seem that he was set for life.“We did not really know what we wanted to do when we graduated.” Mark said. “Some of us went into banking and some became software engineers, and some of us went to the media industry.”

Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M-DDP) invited Mr. Rochak AGRAWAL, Director, Global Portfolio Manager, UBS, to share his innovation experience and the new concept of Gamification at the Executive Forum on 29 September 2017 with over 100 students.

According to Professor Brian Mak, Associate Professor in HKUST’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, a recent survey indicated that Hong Kong is home to around 50,000 people who are either totally deaf or are hearing-impaired. However, the kind of support this community requires is not currently available. “The number of professional sign language interpreters [in Hong Kong] is low – only about 54 in total,” Professor Mak explained. For their final year project, three Computer Science and Engineering undergraduates decided to use the skills they had developed at HKUST to tackle this problem. The app developed by Ken Ka-wai Lai, Mary Ming-fong Leung and Kelvin Wai-chiu Yung translates Chinese sentences keyed into a phone into video sequences illustrating how to sign the words.

Over 900 teams comprising students, startups and professionals participated in the seventh annual One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition organized by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in five cities this year, more than doubled over a year ago.The Competition was first extended to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Macau last year. Prof Gary Chan, Director of the Entrepreneurship Center, said it is encouraging to see the Competition, originally an initiative to nurture entrepreneurs at HKUST, to have grown into a regional contest that helps cultivate entrepreneurial spirits and promote exchange of ideas across the border. “We have witnessed not only an increase in scale, but also rising quality of the submitted proposals and depth of market traction,” said Prof Chan. We are particularly excited to see a record-high industrial sponsorship to the event this year.”

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the largest student-driven hackathon in Asia from April 21-23, 2017, with more than 600 participants coming from various local and overseas universities. The HKUST hackathon is a creativity-to-reality platform which brings together like-minded youths from different academic backgrounds to develop product prototypes, build friendships, and exchange ideas with industry experts. This year’s edition added a new hardware component which challenges the participants to bring their skills to a whole new level—all participating teams had to come up with a hardware solution to tackle within 48 hours. For contestants joining the software hackathon, they were required to work out a software solution within 24 hours under the themes of Gaming, Economy, Healthcare and Transportation.
